Clinical Associate Professor

Greg Wiercioch is a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Wisconsin Law School in Madison. Since 2009, he has served as lead counsel for Texas death row inmate David Leonard Wood.

Greg received his B.A. from the University of Notre Dame and his law degree from Washington and Lee University School of Law, where he served as articles editor of the Law Review.  After graduating, he clerked for Federal Judge Jerry Buchmeyer in Dallas, Texas.

Before coming to the University of Wisconsin in 2012, Greg represented Texas death row inmates in state and federal courts for nearly 20 years. In 1995, he co-founded Texas Defender Service, a nonprofit law firm dedicated to improving the quality of capital representation in Texas. In 2007, Greg faced then-Texas Solicitor General Ted Cruz in the United States Supreme Court in the case of Panetti v. Quarterman. Greg convinced the Supreme Court to prohibit the execution of severely mentally ill inmates who do not have a rational understanding of the reason for their execution. Greg has succeeded in reversing the death sentences of six Texas death row inmates. He has spoken at a number of national conferences about representing death row prisoners.
